El coronavirus no se transmite por alimentos ni sus envases. Conclusiones de la Administración de Medicamentos y Alimentos de EEUU
Según se sabía, el SARS-CoV-2 era capaz de sobrevivir en las superficies por varias horas y desde ellas, ingresar al organismo por boca o nariz por ejemplo, desde las manos de las personas.
Pero ahora, luego de analizar la evidencia científica disponible, la Administración de Medicamentos y Alimentos y el Departamento Norteamericano de Agricultura aseguraron que el nuevo coronavirus no se transmite a las personas a través de los alimentos o de los envases alimenticios.
«Nuestra confianza en la seguridad del suministro de alimentos se mantiene firme. Los consumidores deben estar seguros, tras la información científica actual y en base a un abrumador consenso científico internacional, de que es muy poco probable que los alimentos que se consumen y los envases de los mismos propaguen el coronavirus», señalaron.
El COVID-19 es una enfermedad respiratoria que se transmite de persona a persona, a diferencia de los virus gastrointestinales o los transmitidos por los alimentos, como el norovirus y la hepatitis A. Si bien hay relativamente pocos informes de detección del virus en alimentos y envases, la mayoría de los estudios se centran principalmente en la detección de la huella genética del virus, en lugar de en la evidencia de la transmisión del virus a las personas.
«Dado que la cantidad de partículas de virus que, teóricamente, podrían ser recogidas al tocar una superficie es muy pequeña y la cantidad necesaria para la infección por inhalación oral sería muy alta, las posibilidades de infección al tocar la superficie de los envases o comer alimentos son extremadamente bajas», aseguraron.
